This past Saturday Kalu Yala (Mimi Powell) and Hecha y Derecha joined forces by holding a “venta de patio,” better known as a yard sale. With twelve trash bags full of donated items by the head and founder of Hecha y Derecha, Virginia Campo, this yard sale was a huge success. The inspiration sprouted from Virginia’s realization that instead of simply donating all of her gently used clothes, accessories, shoes and books, she could price them from $.10 cents up to $1 and donate the money to help fund the start of the women’s cooperative in San Miguel!

The result? Hundreds of dollars raised by energetic, passionate women ready to ignite their cooperative business and showcase their talents to a wider market in Panama. As part of their launching, I’m helping them market their talents through a promotional catalog that will give them a more professional foundation to present to clients and markets around Panama. Stay tuned for a preview.

Never would I have guessed that such small change could make such a substantial dent in their piggy bank. These women are strong and their determination to succeed shines through. Truth be told, I feel pretty darn lucky to be interviewing and documenting their talents because each woman has a story and a message and to help make their stories heard is an honor.
