Possible Outdoor Rec Projects
New Trails
Goal- to expand options and difficulty levels of trails within property
- Explore property (follow cattle paths, bush wack new paths, clear, and photograph)
- Place markers to define final trail path
- Do overall general clearing so markers noticeable, and general sense of direction determined
- Break trail into segments and begin detailing each section.
Stairs for Existing + New Trails
Goal- allow easier access along trail/ improve safety of trail
- Have min. 2 interns walk up and down entire trail, and mark areas where they find it difficult or too steep.
- Have interns determine how many stairs will be needed, record to prep materials.
- Work with interns to show them how to build first stair. Allow them to complete
Drainage for Existing + New Trails
Goal- avoid damage to trail during rainy season
- Show interns how to trench.
- Walk trail with them to show where drainage is needed, and why.
Benches/Picnic Table
Goal- to allow users to rest along trail/ at top
- Show interns where benches/table will be placed.
- Show them general design, ask for suggestions or ideas
- Determine final design

Species Signs
Goal- to include knowledgeable and educational awareness along trail
- Team up with Bio
- Mark out areas along trail (lookouts, canopy-covered areas, high density of trees, anywhere interesting, identify species and include on signs.
- Show example of expectations for visual appearance, allow freedom to redesign if wanted.
- Determine final design, present proposal
- Print/ laminate designs
- Collect/ purchase materials for sign structures
- Mount laminated visual on sign structure along trail.

Goal- begin mapping property

Work With Business Program
Jungle Adventures
Goal- to allow outsiders to come experience Kalu Yala
- Team up with business
- Discuss expectations/priorities for tour
- Communicate Business and OR team progressions (messenger)
- Create activities/games for visitors to enjoy (make list of available programs/activities)
- Take notes of likes/dislikes and successes vs improvements if/when groups make it out for adventure weekend.
Tour Guide
Goal- to develop understanding of trails and share with outsiders
Walk trails and get to know real well/ become expert
- Work with Bio team and Locals to get to know environment on trail
- Set up practice runs with other interns as audience, get feedback
- Guide tours on trails if/when jungle adventurers come out to property
Monumental Art Park
Goal- to add unique and attractive features to property
- Determine best location for park (review schematic village drawings, scope out cleared out areas with views.
- Design layout (benches, tables, scupltures etc)
- Begin constructing “furniture”
- Start creating artwork for park
Leisure Multi-purpose court
Goal- to provide additional recreational activities for those waiting for or not interested in volleyball
- Create survey to determine which activities would be most appropriate for community
- Determine placement of field/court, mark corners/perimeter
- Clear area, dig-u/pack down ground (remove weeds/roots)
- Add necessary drainage, etc
- Lay/ pin down plastic sheeting
- Cover with sand
Fishing
Goal- to expand recreational use of rivers, and include in Jungle Adventure program planning
- Explore rivers/ streams
- Talk with locals to find out their knowledge on local fishing strategies
- test and document different fishing spots (include time of day, technique, species, location, etc)
Camp Hospitality
Goal- to make sure basecamp is welcoming and hospitable to all who visit
- Organize/clean camp area (maintain cleanliness)
- Improve aesthetics of basecamp (artwork, ornamental plants, etc)
- Create “camp paths” (ex. to bathroom, to ag plot, to chicken coop, etc)
- Clear overgrown areas
- Make sure all essential amenities are available at camp
Build Low Ropes Course
Goal- to test team communication and ability to work together, to get to know/trust eachother
*Use as an icebreaker for OR (first group project for OR team members)
- Have meeting and review/discuss low ropes course proposal (by Anne Shingler)

- Go out and harvest materials (in small groups)
